Slainte Irish meaning – and other Irish toast words

O’ – the Irish culture is famous for its friendly people, music and of course drinking culture.  One of the most common Irish traditions is toasting, especially while enjoying a pint of Guinness at the local pub.  Here are some Irish toast words that you can add to add a touch of the Emerald Isle to your next toast.

Slainte – (pronounced “slawn-cha”).

This is the most common Irish toast and it means “health”.  It’s used when raising a glass to wish someone good health and any formal or informal situation.

Slainte mhaith (pronounced “slawn-cha vah”).

This also means “good health” and is often used when someone is wishing for a speedy recovery from illness or injury.

Gon-eiri an bother leat (pronounced “guh nigh-ree on boh-har lat”).

This Irish toast means “May the road rise to meet you” and is a traditional blessing often used at weddings, graduations or other big life events.  It’s a way of wishing someone well on their journey in life.

Slan go foil (pronounced “slawn guh fole”).

Simply “goodbye for now” and a common way to say goodbye and to hope to meet them again soon.

Ar gcara go deo (pronounced “are gara guh joe”)

This Irish toast means “our friend forever” – this is one of my favorites to toast to lifelong friends.  Friends that endure through thick and thin.

Have fun with these Irish toast words, they can add a touch of Irish charm to any occasion. Whether you’re raising a glass to celebrate a special moment or just enjoying a pint of Guinness with friends, these phrases can help you express your Irish spirit and bring a smile to everyone’s face. Sláinte!
